The Sum That Was Never Taken

How the West's newest theory of mind inherited a problem that Kashmir Shaivism never had to solve

Every physicist since Galileo has worked from an amputation. Colour, taste, warmth, the felt weight of a thing in the hand - Galileo set these aside as secondary qualities, useful fictions of the perceiving animal, and kept for physics only what could be measured: extension, motion, number. It was a brilliant amputation. It gave us four centuries of predictive power. It also guaranteed that no description built from what remained could ever explain what was cut away. You cannot recover a felt quality from a science that defined itself by excluding felt qualities. This is the hard problem, and at bottom it is a bill coming due on a four-hundred-year-old loan, dressed up as a problem about consciousness.

Panpsychism is the most serious attempt in contemporary Western philosophy to pay that bill without renouncing physicalism’s ledger. Philip Goff, in Galileo’s Error, names the diagnosis directly and proposes a fix: put the felt qualities back in, but push them all the way down. Not brains, not neurons, but the fundamental particles themselves - electrons, quarks, whatever physics finally settles on - carry some primitive form of experience, some proto-phenomenal spark. Galen Strawson had already argued for a “realistic monism” on similar grounds: if experience is real and physicalism is true, then experience must be a property of the physical at its most basic level, because there is nowhere else for it to have come from. It is an elegant move. It solves the emergence problem by refusing emergence. Nothing new comes from nothing; therefore experience was never new.

But elegance at the bottom creates a debt at the top, and the debt has a name: the combination problem. If electrons have tiny experiences, and a human brain is an assembly of roughly eighty-six billion neurons built from unfathomably more electrons, how do those countless micro-experiences combine into the single unified experience of a person looking at a red door in the rain? David Chalmers, who has done more than anyone to formalise the difficulty, splits it into three related failures. The subject-combination problem: how do many subjects of experience ever add up to one subject, when subjecthood does not seem to be the kind of thing that sums. The quality-combination problem: how do simple experiential qualities combine into the rich, structured qualities of a human perceptual field. The structure-combination problem: how does the definite, unified structure of a conscious field arise from an aggregate that has no such structure to begin with. William James had already sensed the shape of this difficulty in 1890 and called it mind-dust - a hundred feelings, he wrote, do not somehow assemble themselves into one hundred-and-first feeling that includes and unifies them. A committee is not a mind, however many minutes it produces. Wire twelve people’s brains together with the finest fibre-optic bundle available and you get twelve people wired together, not a thirteenth consciousness surveying the whole. Chalmers’ own 2016 paper on the subject treats it less as an engineering snag than as a structural fact about what subjecthood is: singular, and therefore, on its face, unsummable.

The panpsychist responses tend to move in one of two directions, and both are diagnostic of a deeper trouble. Some, following Tononi’s integrated information theory, try to locate the missing unity in causal structure itself - a system counts as one subject to the degree that its parts are integrated beyond what any partition of it could achieve, a mathematically precise measure called phi. This buys formal rigor but not an answer to why integration of that particular kind should feel like anything, from the inside, to be one thing. Others reverse the direction of construction entirely. Itay Shani’s and Yujin Nagasawa’s cosmopsychism proposes that the fundamental subject is not the electron but the cosmos as a whole - one universal consciousness, from which individual human minds are not built up but rather decompressed, carved out, individuated. This move quietly concedes the argument. It admits that combination going up from parts cannot produce a genuine subject, and so it flips the direction: start with the one, and explain the many as its differentiation. Which is the correct move. It is also, without quite realising it, a rediscovery of ground that a Kashmiri tantric philosopher had already surveyed, mapped, and built a complete soteriology upon, a thousand years before Nagasawa’s first paper.

Kashmir Shaivism never had a combination problem, because it never started with parts.

The Pratyabhijna school - the “Recognition” school, from prati + abhi + jna, to know again - takes its shape across three generations: Somananda’s Shivadrishti laying the ground, Utpaladeva’s Ishvarapratyabhijnakarika giving it rigorous philosophical argument, Abhinavagupta’s Pratyabhijnahridayam and Tantraloka synthesising it into the fullest non-dual system Kashmir produced. Its starting postulate is Paramashiva: one reality, without a second, whose nature is inseparably prakasha and vimarsha. Prakasha is the sheer fact of manifestation, the “there-ness” by which anything at all appears rather than not appearing - light in a sense prior to, and other than, the physical wave that physics measures. Nothing can be known, sensed, or thought without first being illuminated by this light, and the light itself cannot be an object within the illumination it makes possible, for the same reason a lamp cannot be lit by the light it is currently producing. This much a Nyaya logician or an Advaitin would recognise; the witness-consciousness, the sakshi, is prakasha under another name, a subject explored in these pages in a different register some weeks ago. But the Pratyabhijna masters insisted, against a purely static reading of the witness, that prakasha is never mute. It is inseparably vimarsha - self-referential awareness, the light’s capacity to know itself as itself, the “I” that shines and simultaneously recognises its own shining. Abhinavagupta’s favourite illustration is the mirror: a mirror without the capacity to reflect would not really be a mirror at all, only a flat surface pretending at reflectivity. Consciousness without vimarsha would be prakasha in name only - and, crucially, would be an inert light incapable of producing anything, incapable of a universe. Vimarsha is the freedom (svatantrya) by which the one light turns upon itself, and in that self-turning, throbs.

That throb has a name too: spanda, from the dhatu spand, to quiver, to pulse faintly. The Spanda Karikas, attributed to Vasugupta and elaborated by Kallata, describe the entire manifest universe as this single subtle vibration of Paramashiva’s self-awareness - not a vibration happening within some prior empty space, but the very trembling by which “space,” “objects,” and “other subjects” first come to appear at all. Creation, in this reading, is not addition. It is the one consciousness contracting (sankoca) its own infinite self-recognition into apparently finite centres of experience, veiling from itself, through its own maya-shakti and the five kanchukas of limitation, the fact that each contracted centre is still, underneath the contraction, the whole. The individual soul, the anu, is the entire prakasha-vimarsha in undiminished fullness, wearing a costume of limitation it wove for itself out of its own freedom, for the sake of the sheer delight (ananda) of self-discovery through apparent otherness - never a fragment chipped off some larger consciousness-stuff, never a piece awaiting later reassembly with others into a bigger mind. Every “other” mind you have ever encountered is, on this account, the identical light you are, playing the game of not-yet-having-recognised-itself from a different angle inside the same single field.

This is why the combination problem simply does not arise for the Pratyabhijna philosopher, rather than arising and then getting patched. Combination is a problem for a philosophy that begins its story with the many and needs to explain how they become one. Kashmir Shaivism begins its story with the one and explains the many as that one’s own self-limiting play (lila). Nothing needs summing because nothing was ever separate enough to require a sum. The seeming plurality of subjects - your consciousness, mine, the reader’s three tabs over - is what Abhinavagupta calls abhasa, a shining-forth within the single light, the way a single flame can be seen reflected in a thousand water jars without the flame having been divided a thousand times or the jars having generated a thousand new flames between them. Chalmers’ subject-combination problem asks how many subjects add up to one. Utpaladeva’s system never needs the addition, because his answer to “how many subjects are there” is one, appearing as many, and the appearing is not arithmetic. It is play, and play does not obey the axioms of a sum.

It is worth sitting with why the West’s most sophisticated recent attempt to fix panpsychism - cosmopsychism - reproduces roughly half of this architecture and then stalls. Cosmopsychism gets the direction right: whole before parts, one decompressing into many rather than many aggregating into one. What it lacks is everything the Pratyabhijna tradition spent centuries building to make that direction actually work as an account of finite, limited, apparently ignorant individual minds - a theory of how and why the one veils itself (maya-shakti and the kanchukas of limitation, contraction, time, causal necessity, imperfection, attachment), a theory of the felt quality of that veiling (why it feels like being a separate, bounded person rather than feeling like nothing in particular), and a soteriology that follows from the metaphysics as its natural consequence rather than as an afterthought. Cosmopsychism has the skeleton. It has not yet noticed that Kashmir built the whole body a millennium ago and left detailed instructions for how to walk in it.

Those instructions are the actual point of the school’s name. Pratyabhijna is recognition, not discovery, and the difference is the entire soteriology in miniature. Discovery implies you did not have the thing and now you do; it is additive, a species of combination applied to the self across time instead of across parts. Recognition implies you had it the entire time and merely failed, through the specific and describable mechanism of self-contraction, to notice. Abhinavagupta’s stock example is a woman who has been wearing a necklace all along and spends the morning frantically searching the house for it - the moment of finding is simply the end of a self-imposed not-seeing - nothing is acquired, since the necklace was never elsewhere to begin with. Liberation, moksha, in this system is exactly that structure applied to consciousness itself: the anu recognising that it is, was, and could never have stopped being, Paramashiva. No practice adds anything to the practitioner. Practice - mantra, breath, the guru’s glance, the sudden shock of aesthetic rapture Abhinavagupta analyses at such length in his theory of rasa - simply thins the sankoca until recognition occurs on its own, the way a room does not require new light to be added to it, only the removal of what was blocking the light already there.

What is true for the jiva is true for the samuha, and the West keeps making the same mistake at both scales.

The combination problem in the philosophy of mind has a first cousin in political philosophy, and it is worth naming the family resemblance, because the same aggregative reflex produces both. Social contract theory, from Hobbes forward, begins with individuals - separate, complete, self-interested units existing prior to any collective - and asks how they might combine, through covenant or convention, into a body politic. The state, on this account, is built the way panpsychism wants a mind built: many discrete units, summed by agreement, into something that then gets treated, awkwardly, as if it possessed a single will. Rousseau’s general will is the social-contract tradition’s own cosmopsychism - a late attempt to smuggle back a genuine collective subject after having started the story with atomised individuals who cannot, strictly, produce one by mere aggregation. The Purusha Sukta of the Rigveda proposes the opposite architecture from the opposite direction, structurally identical to Pratyabhijna’s move against panpsychism. Varna does not arise because separate individuals contracted into functional roles for mutual advantage. It arises as the differentiation of a single cosmic Purusha - brahmana from the mouth, kshatriya from the arms, vaishya from the thighs, shudra from the feet - one body understanding itself, through its own inherent multiplicity of function, as many organs of a single organism rather than many organisms agreeing to share one skin. The society, like the mind, was never assembled. It was always one thing, contracted into apparently separate functions for the sake of its own working, and the health of the whole was never going to be recoverable by better rules for combining the parts, only by each part recognising - pratyabhijna again - what it already was in relation to the rest.

The West keeps discovering, at the top of its most sophisticated theories, that you cannot build a genuine one out of a genuine many, no matter how carefully you wire the many together. It discovered this in political philosophy and patched it with increasingly strained fictions of collective will. It is discovering it now in the philosophy of mind, and patching it with cosmopsychism, a one-way ticket to a conclusion Kashmir reached with a fully worked-out itinerary in the ninth century. The mistake in both cases is the same mistake, made at different scales, and it has a single root: the assumption that unity is the harder thing to explain, and multiplicity the given. Reverse the assumption - start with the one undivided prakasha-vimarsha, throbbing with its own spanda, contracting itself for the sheer play of it into apparent particles, apparent brains, apparent citizens, apparent electrons with their proto-phenomenal sparks - and the combination problem does not get solved. It gets seen through, the way the woman finally sees the necklace she was wearing the entire time she searched the house for it.

Or the Western theorist can keep assembling an orchestra out of individually humming atoms and waiting for the symphony to emerge from sufficiently intricate wiring. Kashmir’s answer was never that the symphony would emerge. It was that the symphony was always playing, that every hum was already a note inside it, and that what had been mistaken for silence between the atoms was, on closer listening, the conductor.
